Why I started my own driving school

Hello, friends!

I am Alexey, the founder of Autokool Kindel Rool. Today I want to share the story that led me to start my own driving school – and to decide what kind of school it had to be.

A little over a year ago I was training for category CE. A truck and a trailer – quite a challenge, isn’t it? But what really shocked me was the way I was taught. In the first lesson the instructor walked alongside my truck and shouted through the window about how I should be turning the wheel. It felt more like training animals than teaching people.

And then came the part that still makes me shake my head: in the lessons that followed, the instructor simply slept in his car while I tried to work out from my own mistakes how to handle that “damned” trailer.

Naturally I had to take extra lessons, because the results of that kind of “teaching” fell far short of what I wanted. At one point I even thought about changing schools, but in the end I passed the exam – on the second attempt.

After that experience I asked myself: why do so many driving instructors forget that teaching should be a supportive and respectful process, not a school of stress and fear? Is it not our job to help learners grow into skilled and confident drivers?

Driving test pass rates at Tallinn driving schools: how to choose the best one?

We compare driving schools in Tallinn by their category B driving test pass rates over the last 5 years. We look separately at how learners do on the first attempt and at retests. Data source: the Transport Administration public statistics.

When you choose a driving school in Tallinn, the fairest measure for comparing them is their driving test pass rate. Statistics do not lie – over a long period they show how well a school actually prepares its learners.

How are the results calculated?

Period: We use official statistics for the last 5 years (60 months). That gives a statistically reliable and stable picture.
Location: The main focus is on tests in Tallinn (Heli, Teelise, Valge). As additional information we also show each school results across Estonia as a whole.
Attempt analysis: We show the statistics separately:
- First attempt: what share of learners pass the test straight away.
- Retests: the pass rate on the second and subsequent attempts.
Comparison: The system calculates how many times more often learners at the selected school pass the test compared with a competitor or with the Tallinn average.

This thorough approach (a long period plus separating the attempts) rules out random fluctuations and shows the real standard of each school.

Why does the first-attempt pass rate matter?

A high pass rate on the first attempt shows that the driving school does not send a learner to the test to have a go, but when they are genuinely ready. That saves the learner time, money (state fees, extra driving lessons) and nerves. The retest statistics, in turn, show how well a school can analyse mistakes and help a learner to learn from them.

It shows the percentage of a given school learners who pass the driving test successfully on their first attempt. This is the key quality indicator, and it points to good preparation.

How long does the driving test take?

The length of a test also says something about how far a candidate gets. According to 2025 data, a driving test in Tallinn lasts 34.5 minutes on average, and 40.5 minutes for Kindel Rool students. A passed test takes exactly the same time in both cases — 46.8 minutes. The difference comes from failed attempts: in Tallinn the drive ends after 25.3 minutes on average, for our students after 29.1. A short test usually means the drive was stopped early.
