Before the category B driving test: what to remember

1. Starting the engine and checking it

• Get into the car and start the engine with the key, not a button.
• Make sure the engine is running — the revs must be above zero.
• In an automatic, the engine will not start if a gear (D or R) is selected. Move the selector to P and try again.
• Check that no red warning lights are showing on the dashboard before you set off.

2. Setting up the driving position

Adjust the seat, the backrest, the head restraint and all the mirrors. If you notice while driving that a mirror is not set correctly, stop where it is permitted and adjust it — adjusting while moving is not allowed.

3. Before pulling away

• Leave the lights on AUTO only when there is no rain, snow, fog or dusk – the car often fails to detect poor visibility and the rear position lights stay off. In those conditions switch on the dipped beam yourself.
• In rain or fog, switch on the A/C to stop the windows misting up and distracting you.
• The handbrake is mechanical — practise in a car with the same arrangement.
• Check once more that no red warning lights are showing before you set off.

4. Pulling out of a parking space

• Always look right and left — this is one of the most common test mistakes.
• Do not turn the wheel fully straight away. Pull out halfway, then start turning while watching the cars parked beside you.
• When reversing, give way to everyone. If someone is approaching, go back into the space and do not obstruct traffic.
• Always use the indicator: when stopping, when pulling away and for every manoeuvre.

5. What to know about the test area

• A 10 km/h speed limit applies on the Transport Administration test area on Heli street.

6. Get to know the test car

The Transport Administration uses Kia Ceed vehicles. Read through the exam description and the possible questions on the Transport Administration website in advance, and have a look at the Kia owner's manual.
